EBONY HORSEWOMEN
"You Have Been Pre-destined"
It began with an Jewish grocer who had a horse and wagon next door to a home newly purchased by her parents in the early 50's. Her first friends in this strange new neighborhood was the grocer, Mr. Fisher and his horse who she brushed daily and later rode until his death 2 years later in a fire.
She later rode the dusty trails with Gene Autrey, Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger and Hop- A-long Cassidy but now her trusty steed was an old green Queen Anne Chair and her father's neck ties as reins. She rode every Saturday morning at her peril by sitting on the arm of her mother's treasured chair. Nevertheless, she rode. Such a strange child who is considered a "colored girl" with no available supporting images, no available supporting history, perceived herself to be a cowgirl.
After high school she joined the United States Marine and after her time in the Corps was over she returned home only to find that the passion for the horse had grown and persisted to pull at her.
It was then that she connected with a men's group in Hartford, CT, The Ebony Horsemen, who for decades had been special group of African-American horsemen now finding that their organization had traveled to the end of it rode. She approached the President of this retiring group, thinking to just satisfy her personal need to reconnect with the horse and found that in that effort would be the foundation of what is now known as the Ebony Horsewomen. So, in the Fall of 1984, Patricia E. Lawson-Kelly and her youngest daughter founded and organized the Ebony Horsewomen.
Ebony Horsewomen's membership which laid the foundation for the organization has members from Alaska to Maine and are skilled equestrians who appeared in parades, rodeos and horse shows all across America.
